Discipline is an act of staying focused, and dedicated to a course. It is a deliberate effort to get things done even when the conditions are not convenient or palatable. For you to be taken seriously as a writer, there must be that element of discipline you are imbibing on a regular basis.

Writing is a deliberate act through which writers communicate with their immediate environment. You cannot call yourself a writer without having a flair for writing. Also, being a writer does not mean you will feel like writing everytime. There are days when there will be no drive or inspiration to write. What do you do on such days? Writing can be like breaking rocks to get water from it. Imagine the effort you have to put into that? Consider the long stretch of time it will take you to eventually get the water you seek, if perhaps you endure the discipline it will exert on you.

When passion for writing dies, inspiration suddenly fades away. It is passion that instills discipline, and discipline will ignite inspiration which will in turn enable you to put pen to paper to birth a beautiful creation.

Many people desire to be called a writer or to have a book written in their names. However, how many of them can endure the long process of tasking their brains, researching and reading different materials available so that they can churn out a masterpiece?

Discipline is a trademark that separates the wishing writer from an actual writer. Many people wish they could write. Many others who could write have not enrolled in the school of discipline that writing quality content requires. To this end, in this article, I will be sharing five importance of discipline to writing.

1. Discipline Dispels Laziness

Have you had an inspiration to write something but promised to write it at a more convenient time? Did you realize that you don’t get to do the writing because the inspiration, like a mist, is gone from your head? What made that happen is laziness. It is said that the blunt pen is clearer than the sharpest memory. This is because human memory is unreliable. The idea for a topic you commit to memory and hope to later write on, never gets written because you lost the idea.

2. It Helps You Stay Focused

If it is your writing that puts food on your table and clothes on your back, you will likely not slack in engaging in it whether you like it or not. You will discipline yourself to write even to exhaustion because failure to do so means you will be penniless and hunger will disgrace you like a thief.

3. Discipline Brings Out The Best In You

Martial artists who break bricks with bare hands must have committed to the discipline of long hours of training until they became masters in their craft. The same applies to you as a writer. The more disciplined you are as a writer, the more you write. The more you write, the better you become.

4. It will Affect Other Areas of Your Life

A disciplined writer will soon become disciplined in other areas of his life. Just as laziness diminishes the worth of a man, discipline on the other hand, places much value on him. When you are disciplined in your writing engagements, it will rub off on other aspects of your life.

Conclusion

All renown writers dead or alive are/were disciplined people. If they are/were not disciplined, they would not have churned out those beautiful writings that the whole world is celebrating them for. Whatever your level as a writer, you must imbibe the habit of discipline if you really want to succeed.
