Introduction

Earning through writing is the dream of every writer. However, getting to that level where you get paid for your writing doesn’t come by mere wishing but by serious hard work. So, if you want to earn as a writer, I will implore you to read to the end of this article.

What then is writing? Writing could be described as a system of stringing words together to create images, which in turn create a world of ideas that readers can relate with, and experience a sense of fulfillment. Before your writing can earn you a sum, that means you must have done a thorough job that will make readers always demand more of your writing. So, below are some things you must do to earn money for your writing engagements.

Read Widely

Good writers are voracious readers. You can’t call yourself a writer if you are not committed to reading. Reading improves your writing and your writing takes your readers on an unforgettable journey. There is no hard and fast rule to reading. What you want to make sure of is to read as often as you breathe. When you do this, you set yourself up for getting noticed and getting paid for writing.

Put Yourself out There.

Most writers begin their journey by writing what is termed doggerel in poetry. A cheap kind of poetry. This may not be the best that they can write but they do it all the same. The next thing is to let the world see what you have written. There is no sense in hiding your writing from the public eye. Share your writing with your family and friends. Though they may not give you an honest critique in order not to hurt your feelings. However, showing them your work will earn you a nod of congratulations or there is room for improvement. Submit your work to literary sites and writing competitions. You may not get acceptance immediately but doing this gives you a certain edge of being noticed.

Volunteer

Volunteering as a writer at every opportunity can help you build a portfolio when the time comes to apply for writing jobs. Volunteering is a way of honing your skills in preparation for getting paid for your efforts.

Learn from Established Writers

Learning from established writers can also improve your writing. Here, you get to see their style and methods of writing, their preoccupation and what sets them apart from other writers. You can follow them on their socials and adopt their writing methods without sounding like them.

Join Writing Clubs or Platforms

You can join writing clubs as this affords many opportunities of getting noticed when there is a call for writers of all kinds.

Be Conversant with the Internet

As a writer, the internet is your second home. This is where you can access writing resources, find writing gigs to apply for, and literary sites you can subscribe to, to get updates about writing.

Have a Writing Niche

As a writer, you must identify your writing niche. That is, the aspect of writing that you are most comfortable with as you cannot write about everything.

Have a Platform

As a budding writer, you should have a major platform on socials where you publish your writings. You could start a blog, a Facebook page or other platforms where your writing can be easily accessible and where you can build a community of readers.

Write, Write and Write

If you must earn for your writing, then you must be ready to cultivate the habit of writing. Writing every day is proof that you really mean business. If you don’t write, you are not a writer because writers always write. Write about anything; your day to day activities, your experience, your observation and your perceptions about things. Writing is a way of documenting your thoughts, and it also helps you keep track of your writing progress.

Conclusion

Writing to earn must be approached with a lot of caution as focusing too much on getting paid may derail you from the actual process of improving your writing first. So, first strive to develop your writing skill and in no time, you will gradually earn for your writing.
